When I Don't Understand

Image
Hello, I know this is highly irregular for me to be posting for a third time this month, but a lot has happened in the world as I'm sure you all know. I don't think there is one person who isn't affected by the virus that has circled the world.  I'm not sure how long it will last, but I know everything has an end and this can't last forever.  I don't understand what is going on, why people are acting the way they are, other than that they're scared. I get it. I'm scared too. About a month ago, one of my uncles died suddenly.  My dad got a phone call that he was in the hospital and was passing quickly. He died within hours. I'll admit that I didn't know how to process it. Until then, we had assumed he was fine. We didn't even know he was sick.  I was at work when I found out and tried to keep it together, but the tears came. I left work and came home with a heavy heart. The following day, I had another shift at work. I don...

Poetry 15th, March 2020

Spring seems to bring out the contemplative mood in me. Not entirely sure why. Maybe it's the plethora of rain and cloudy days, (Rainy/cloudy weather is my thinking/creative weather and I love it!), or the tiny baby animals or the flowers pushing their way up through damp soil.  Spring is a special time. Today is the Ides of March. You know, the day on which Julius Caesar is reported to have been stabbed to death? Yeah, that day. And no. I'm not writing a poem based on this event, although that would be interesting. No. The topic of the month is spring.  Spring is the time of growing things. It's the time that the manzanita tree buds and the birds sing and daffodils make their appearance. You are more than welcome to use the above prompt do your own creative thing.  Here is my response: Hurray for daffodils! My favorite spring flower, the herald of the season! Have an absolutely fantastic day! Until next time... -Arysta Henry/ ...

The Month of Daffodils and How I Used to Tell Time

Image
Happy March 3rd!  I was just talking with someone on Twitter about different ways we told time when we were younger.  As a kid, I knew it was Spring when the daffodils came out. Daffodils also meant that it was March and that my dad's birthday wasn't far away. Some daffodils outside my place of work. Aren't they cheerful? Now, I add the sights of blue-eyed grasses, baby animals, lots of green grasses and areas that look like places where fairies might walk. Perks of living in the country. Summer meant that the community pool opened, the 4th of July Parade, watermelon, high temperatures, popsicles, sun-showers, fun running through sprinklers, Summer Library Reading Contest, weird red-days in the evening, no school and the grass gets brown. Fall meant the scent of apple pie floating down main street, high winds, the changing of leaves, the community pool closes, back to school, cool weather and Thanksgiving family get-togethers. Winter promised snow, but n...

Poetry 15th, February 2020

Hello and happy International Friendship Month everyone!  I'm not sure what it's been like for you, but February has been a whopper of a month and I feel like I've gone through the full range of emotions within fifteen days. Through it all, God has been good and I've learned things that I wouldn't have learned otherwise.  Today is the fifteenth! Yay! About halfway through the month. We did it everyone! In keeping with the theme of this month, I thought a good poetry prompt would be "friends." Honestly, I wouldn't have made it this far through the month without my friends. I'm so happy that there's a whole month devoted to friendship. I wrote this poem a couple of years ago during a dark time in my life and so I thought I bring it out again for this month. If you'd like to use the prompt above to write a poem of your own about friends, or draw a picture, write a song or do something creative, you're more than welco...

International Friendship Month

Image
February is known for many things.  Where I live, this month has been known for the odd snow storm or torrential downpour of rain. (Last Valentine's Day I couldn't get into work because the streets were flooded and there was a waterfall running down the slope above our parking lot and into the street.)  Most famously, February is known for Valentines Day. Yep. That day devoted to love, the one that makes single people uncomfortable, one of the holidays overrun with commercialism, flowers, teddy bears, balloons and heart-shaped candy.  When I was little, I loved making old-fashioned Valentine cards with paper lace and giving them out to my siblings and parents. Now that I'm older, I suppose I've gotten a bit jaded with the holiday. It just doesn't have the same feeling it did when I was younger, which is why I was excited when I heard that February is also International Friendship Month.  Yep. You heard that right. A whole month devoted to friendship. Isn...

Hello 2020

Image
Hello!  I meant to get this out earlier, but life has thrown quite a few curveballs recently and I feel like I've been sucked to the bottom. I'm still trying to recover from a chaotic month, but I'm going to give this my best shot.  2020. Hmm. A new year. Normally, this is the time of year when everyone is cleaning out their closets or desks (maybe both!), choosing New Year's Resolutions and getting to the gym.   Last year, I gave up making "New Year Resolutions". I continue to fail them time and again. At this point, they are not worth it. Making a resolution, for me, is basically setting myself up for disappointment.                                                               All that being said, there are some things I do. I do  make goals and I do have certain words that I tr...

Poetry 15th-January 2020

Happy New Year Everyone!  I hope everybody had a good holiday season, got some rest and time with family. This is usually the time where people set New Year's resolutions, goals or something like them. I tend to stay away from them because I just end up disappointing myself, but I do like doing something as a sort of "banner-to-the-year." (More on that in a post later this month.)    I'm so excited about this month's creativity prompt. How many of you are inspired by mornings? I mean early mornings, before most of the world is awake? Mornings when the sky turns a soft pink and melds with a powdery blue? Mornings where the sun sets the world on fire? Those kind of mornings. The kind of mornings where you just want to sing a response to the sunrise.       I wrote this poem earlier this month, half of it in my head on my way to work one Saturday morning and just had to share it with you. I'm not often up and outside this early in the mor...
