Filling the Cup of Wonder

Image
Hello! During the last post, I talked about cultivating sense of wonder.  Without wonder, we often find ourselves going about the day-to-day with a sense of rote, almost robotic-like rhythm. We don't really think about what we are doing. We just do it. Somewhere in the mix, we lose that childlike sense of wonder, hope and joy. We look forward to the weekends and then realize that they've passed before we've properly dipped our toes in their waters. What if there was a way to have that awareness, that wonder every day? I'm by no means an expert at this, but here are a few things that have helped me cultivate a sense of wonder. 1. Nature Getting outside, going for a walk, or just spending time with green and living plants, breathing in their scents seems to help a lot. Better yet, if you can plant something yourself, water it and watch it grow, that seems to give you something to root for (no pun intended). Suddenly, you are very involved in watching this thing grow and...

Poetry 15th, September 2021

Hello! Today's prompt comes from a poem that I've been working on for about a year now. Most of the time my poems come to me in snatches of inspiration, starting out with an image or a line, and then I just follow the idea until the end. Here is this month's prompt: For some reason, the word, "herald" always comes to mind when I think of this season. A picture that comes to mind is an autumn herald with a crown of colored leaves, riding through a carpet of stained-glass leaves on a horse. Anyway, musings aside, here is my response to the prompt. The poem itself was so long that I couldn't fit it on a quote graphic. Autumn Soul by Julia Garcia I am an Autumn Soul, A bright, eternal fire, A will-o'-the-wisp, in the lantern light. I'm a crown of red and green, A fairy amidst the evergreens, I'm a spire of smoke, Twisting to heavenly heights, A pumpkin patch, in a carpet of gold. I'm a sheet of diamond rain, A blanket of fog. I am a ghost on the ...

Hello! One of my favorite things to do nowadays is watch the play of the sun as it hits the trees and casts shadows across the road. There's this special time of the evening where it's particularly beautiful. It's a magical moment where the world seems to hold its breath and anything can happen. It's a moment where the world seems to stop; a moment trapped in time. My response to this month's prompt came from my observations of this time of day. As always, please feel free to use the prompt below to generate your own creativity.  Here is the prompt: Last week, I took my red Lord of the Rings notebook and my red pen (I really like red. Don't know if you can tell.) and went outside. I found a place where I could watch the road by my house and just sat, observed and listened. I must have sat there for a good half an hour; it was so peaceful! Out of that time came this poem. Now, I'd like to hear from you! When was the last time you simply sat outside, observe...

Poetry 15th, June 2020

Because of Audiobook Appreciation Month , I'm making June all about sound. I realized that I wrote a poem about the loss of sound a couple of years ago after I had an injury that damaged my hearing for a month (fun times *grimace*), but I didn't have any poems about sound in general.  If you'd like to use the above prompt for your own creative endeavors, please feel free to do so. Here is my poem about sound, particularly the sounds I hear in my neighborhood in the morning. Random question: Do you collect sounds?  What do I mean by this? I collect sounds in my memory. There's this bird that I've heard every spring since I was five. When I hear its song, that means spring has arrived. There's a certain rhythm of burning wood. One rhythm means wildfire, and one means wood-burning stove fire. There's a sound that the ocean makes at night. I know it's the same during the day, but to me, it's different. Sometimes, when the wind is blowing hard through the...

Poetry 15th

Hello again!  It is the fifteenth of July and as promised, I'm starting up Poetry 15th.  On the fifteenth of every month, I will try to post a poem I've written recently, and you are welcome to post your own in the comments. I will try to post a prompt  as well .                                         Today's prompt is: So, here are the rules: every month, I'll post a graphic advertising the prompt to be answered by the end of the month. You can post your own in the comment section and as long as they're appropriate (think no more than PG rated. Please, no language or sexual content.), I'll approve them. Also, no pressure to post anything, I just thought this would be a fun exercise of our imaginations and if you're experiencing a bout of "Writer's Block", this might help unlock it. Here is mine: Now, go write and have fun! I'll be popp...
