Sylvester Carthage and Arbrook Huxley could not be more different.
Carthage is an eccentric introvert with imagination that reaches beyond the stars. Huxley is a man that loves to live life, even if it lands him in trouble, occasionally. Together, they make up the Electrical Menagerie a show of lights, glitter and electricity.
The Menagerie is a beautiful thing, gathering the respect of small gatherings, but Carthage has bigger dreams. Since childhood he has dreamed of visiting the palace in Celestia. A royal talent competition could help him achieve this dream, but the Menagerie isn't the only competitor...or the most skilled.
Carthage and Huxley will have to put everything on the line, excel beyond all expectations and maneuver political landmines laid in their paths in order to perform for the Future Celestial Queen.
In a world of illusions and magic tricks they may discover that illusions don't just live on the stage, but off them. The competitors are not all that they seem.
I found out about "The Electrical Menagerie" on Twitter and bought the book over a year ago. Because of an extensive TBR (to-be-read) list, I haven't been able to get to it until this year, but now I see what all the hype was about.
Mollie E. Reeder weaves a tale of illusions, dream and friendship that in a beautiful book that I'll pick up again. The dialogue was well written and the description never felt heavy or unneeded. The book reminded me of "The Greatest Showman", but with more depth and feeling.
If you like books with intrigue, colorful characters, flying trains and steampunk worlds, this is the book for you. I can't wait to visit this world again.
